Midtown Montgomery is, as its name suggests, somewhat in the center of the capital city, sitting midway between Montgomery’s “out-east” areas and downtown. Containing several distinct neighborhoods as well as business corridors, Midtown is a vibrant section of the city and beloved by those who call it home—from empty nesters and young families to college students and everyone in between.
Here are six reasons people love living in Midtown Montgomery and why you should check it out when you’re considering where to live, play and enjoy everything Montgomery has to offer.
Why people love visiting + exploring Midtown Montgomery
1. Midtown provides a true taste of Montgomery

As home to multiple independent restaurants, coffee shops and bars, Midtown Montgomery delivers lots of options for eating and drinking local.
- In Old Cloverdale, down some creative craft cocktails at Leroy Lounge, enjoy elevated French-influenced fare like steak frites and tuna nicoise amid cozy bistro vibes at Frenchie’s, or fill up on Southern standards like fried chicken, mac-n-cheese and black-eyed peas at Derk’s Filet & Vine, which also has a fully stocked bottle shop with a large selection of wines.
- Off Zelda Road, Midtown Pizza Kitchen offers a range of tasty pies, and over on Mulberry Street, Tucker Pecans, a decades-old Montgomery company specializing in fresh pecans, provides its namesake nuts roasted, chocolate-covered and more, as well as grab-and-go meal options like ribs, wings and steaks.
- And, if you’re looking for familiar favorites, Midtown is home to the Montgomery outposts of popular larger restaurant groups, too, like Chicken Salad Chick, Moe’s BBQ and Big Bad Breakfast.
2. You can shop, catch a movie + support local businesses—all in Midtown

With loads of independent stores and boutiques, Midtown makes shopping local exciting and easy.
- At Welle Studio in Cloverdale, find the latest ladies fashions, like flirty dresses, as well as on-trend accessories.
- Next door, Buckelew’s boasts shirts, ties, sports jackets + more to outfit men for every occasion — from the office to the golf course.
- Things We Like features books, candles + all kinds of gift items, including a lot of Alabama-made goods, hand-picked by its owners.
- Find an array of beautiful blooms at Al’s Flowers & Gifts on Mulberry Street.
- And when you’re ready to sit a spell, catch a cool movie at The Capri Theatre. Dating back to the early 1940s, it’s the longest continually operating theater in Alabama.
3. Midtown Montgomery is established yet still reinvesting in itself

Midtown Montgomery’s deep roots underpin its allure, but recent revitalization plans ensure its charm stays current, too. The Greater Floyd Campus Master Plan is one of several infrastructure improvement initiatives underway in the city, and it includes:
- redevelopment of the Floyd Community Center
- renovation of the Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center
- freshening of the area’s green spaces by adding walking paths + a community garden
- future plans for the addition of state-of-the-art turf baseball and soccer fields
4. You’ll find miles of architectural history and style in Midtown Montgomery

You’ll find an array of eye-pleasing architecture throughout Midtown Montgomery, including a variety of home types in its neighborhoods, like Cloverdale, McGhee Estates and others.
- The aptly named Garden District is a haven of green, boasting lovely old homes, some dating back to the 1870s, tucked among mature trees and lush landscaping.
- In Cloverdale, historic homes sit on large tree-dotted lots, including the city’s oldest home, the Federal-style Edgewood built in 1821, and the Craftsman-style house once occupied by F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, which is now a museum dedicated to the literary luminaries.
- Huntingdon College’s beautiful campus contains noteworthy examples of Gothic Revival architecture.
- And in McGhee Estates, classic ranch homes dominate. While most were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, many have been recently updated with modern kitchens and bathrooms, plus spacious decks, patios and other outdoor living spaces taking advantage of large backyards.
5. You can stroll and play in shade and safety in Midtown

Walking is a favorite pastime in Midtown Montgomery’s wide streets—many staying cool thanks to the shade provided by abundant trees.
- In McGhee Estates, dedicated walking and bike lanes painted on the roads give pedestrians increased peace of mind.
- Similar walking lanes, designated with a green-painted path on Cloverdale Road, make up The Cloverdale Trail. The Cloverdale area also offers several parks perfect for strolling or relaxing with a book.
- And Midtown Montgomery’s playground situation is seriously good. The area boasts multiple places for kids to enjoy active, outdoor fun.
