Montgomery Whitewater receives continued funding in new county budget
Reading time: 2 minutes
Montgomery Whitewater will continue receiving financial backing from the Montgomery County Commission. During its meeting this week, county officials approved its $183 million Fiscal Year 2027 annual operating budget, running from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027. The newly passed budget includes a $500,000 allocation to support the Whitewater project during its upcoming fiscal year.
The motion passed with a 3-2 vote by the commission.
County budget approval guarantees continued support
Montgomery County District 3 Commissioner Justin Castanza, who voted in favor of the budget, stated that the goal is not to guarantee that Montgomery Whitewater continues operating in the same manner as it does now.
Commissioner Castanza expressed his support to the Montgomery County Community Cooperative District, the local government body created to own, oversee and manage the outdoor recreation park, for its ongoing work on the landmark development. He added that the end result remains a chance for local leaders to be effective stewards of public funds.
“I just want to give them my confidence and my appreciation for their continued efforts to make the best they can out of a very difficult situation,” Castanza shared, noting that the current pause offers an opportunity to provide for the community through a potential rebrand.
What activities are on hold at Montgomery Whitewater?
Montgomery Whitewater is temporarily closed for the season, with plans to return revamped and refreshed this spring. During this operational pause, all primary park activities have been put on hold, including:
- Whitewater rafting and kayaking on the artificial rapids
- Flatwater paddleboarding and recreational water activities
- On-site dining at Eddy’s Restaurant
- Use of surrounding trails
- Public community events
With financial backing secured for the upcoming fiscal year, local officials and residents alike are watching closely to see how Montgomery Whitewater transforms before opening its gates again.
