Montgomery Whitewater temporarily closes its doors: What to know

Montgomery Whitewater has officially paused operations for the season, according to a weekend update shared on the park’s social media channels.
The decision arrives after some Montgomery County commissioners publicly advocated for a temporary shutdown to address ongoing funding concerns and restructure operations, noting that the high-profile venue has fallen short of initial expectations.

Montgomery Whitewater was originally brought to fruition through shared visions and capital investments from the Montgomery County Commission, City of Montgomery, the State of Alabama and local leaders aimed at propelling growth across the River Region.
While the City of Montgomery contributed supporting resources, primary oversight of the project was managed by the county commission. Weighing in on the venue’s future, Mayor Steven Reed highlighted the need for a collaborative approach to development:
“I believe that with the proper management, as well as the proper vision casting, Montgomery Whitewater can be successful. It’s going to take time, like everything else. It’s also going to take an understanding that initiatives like that don’t survive on their own—they survive when there’s a collaboration of development that goes with it, not only from leisure and recreation but hospitality as well.”

What is currently closed at the Montgomery Whitewater park?
Montgomery Whitewater amenities like Eddy’s Restaurant and the surrounding walking and running trails are also unavailable during the closure. Additionally, all upcoming events have been cleared from the facility’s official calendar.
When operational, the world-class facility provided a comprehensive suite of outdoor recreation, including:
- Guided white-water rafting and kayaking on artificial rapids
- Paddleboarding and flatwater recreation
- Social spaces
- Community events
A look back at the history of Montgomery Whitewater
Located at 1100 Maxwell Blvd. near Maxwell Air Force Base and just off Interstate 65, the 120-acre venue officially celebrated its grand opening on July 7, 2023.
Since its launch, the park has placed the capital city on the international sports map. Notable achievements include:
- Olympic stage: The facility hosted Alabama’s first-ever U.S. Olympic Team Trials for canoe and kayak slalom.
- Statewide recognition: The landmark development earned the prestigious “Project of the Year Award” from Business Alabama.
While the venue works through its current operational shift, local and regional outdoor enthusiasts remain hopeful that this temporary pause gives Montgomery Whitewater the time it needs to restructure, refine its offerings and return stronger than ever for the River Region.
