Wetumpka Municipal Airport secures $1M+ investment for new infrastructure

Wetumpka Municipal Airport is taking off into a new era of growth thanks to a major funding announcement from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). As part of its latest Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program cycle, ALDOT is distributing more than $3.1 million to enhance public-use aviation facilities across the state, with Wetumpka landing significant support for local infrastructure upgrades.
New T-hangars + taxilanes heading to Wetumpka Municipal Airport
Wetumpka Municipal Airport is set to undergo key infrastructure enhancements through two newly approved grant projects totaling more than $1.16 million in combined state, local, and federal funds:
- Taxilane Construction: A $381,978 project ($9,549 in state funds paired with $9,550 from the sponsor and $362,879 in FAA funding) dedicated to constructing a new taxilane.
- 10-Unit T-Hangar Project: A $781,646 project split 50-50 between state funds ($390,823) and local sponsor funds ($390,823) to build a brand-new 10-unit T-hangar facility.
Officials say these enhancements will help accommodate additional aircraft, streamline taxiway movement and support business and recreational pilots traveling into Elmore and Montgomery counties.
Statewide ALDOT airport funding + regional aviation growth
With this latest announcement, ALDOT says it has awarded a total of $5,336,018 through the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program so far in 2026.
Wetumpka was among 11 local airports across the state selected to receive funding in this grant cycle. Other grant recipients included:
- Camden Municipal Airport
- Lanett Regional Airport
- Albertville Regional Airport
- Gulf Shores International Airport / Jack Edwards Field
- Dothan Regional Airport
Highlighting the importance of modernizing local airfields, Frank Farmer, bureau chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau, noted:
“Safe, reliable airport facilities require continued investment. These grants will help local airports address important needs and maintain facilities that pilots, businesses and communities can depend on.”
