Reading time: 2 minutes

Tuskegee University is entering a fresh chapter on the gridiron. University officials announced Sunday, Oct. 4, that the school has initiated a national search for a new head football coach to lead the Golden Tigers toward future success.
The announcement comes after the university parted ways with head coach Aaron James. Reflecting on James’ tenure, Reginald S. Ruffin, vice president of intercollegiate athletics and director of athletics, expressed appreciation for his contributions.
“We are extremely grateful to Coach James for his leadership, dedication, and service to Tuskegee University,” Ruffin said. “Aaron is a proud Tuskegee alumnus who has represented his alma mater with tremendous pride. We thank him for his commitment to our student-athletes, our football program, and the Tuskegee community.”
Interim leadership + national recruitment

While the search for a long-term leader is conducted, the program will remain steady under interim leadership. Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Keith Higdon has been named to step into the interim head coach role during the transition.
Athletic leadership is focused on finding someone who understands the deep historical significance of the university’s athletic traditions.
“Tuskegee Football has a proud championship tradition, and our expectations remain high,” Ruffin shared regarding the upcoming search process. “Our commitment is to academic excellence, developing young men, competing for championships, graduating our student-athletes, and representing Tuskegee University with distinction.”

The incoming leader will face the responsibility of balancing historic legacy with modern collegiate athletic demands, including recruiting, student-athlete development, fundraising and alumni engagement.
“We will conduct a comprehensive national search to identify a leader who embraces those expectations and understands The Standard associated with wearing the Crimson and Old Gold,” Ruffin added.
