Public invited to raising of the new Montgomery city flag
Reading time: 2 minutes

Get ready to celebrate as the official debut of the new Montgomery city flag arrives this week! The City of Montgomery will host a public installation ceremony to raise the new banner on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The event kicks off at 9:30AM in front of Montgomery City Hall, located at 103 North Perry St. Free and open to the public, the ceremony marks the official effective date of the new design, replacing the municipal flag that has represented the city since 1952.
How the new Montgomery city flag design was created

The journey to this moment began in 2025, when the Montgomery City Council’s Governmental Affairs & Administration Standing Committee launched a public design contest. Open to residents age 13 and older, the initiative sought a creative symbol centered on unity, peace and the shared values of Montgomery’s diverse community.
Out of 27 submissions, local resident Joshua Gordon’s design emerged as the winner following committee reviews and community-focused modifications.
Every detail of the new flag tells a story about Montgomery’s past, present and future:
- Red diagonal bands symbolize momentum, movement, and an evolving local story
- A blue ceremonial ribbon represents renewal, unity, and fresh beginnings
- Nine old gold stars honor Montgomery’s nine distinct City Council districts
- A central outlined star highlights Montgomery’s role as Alabama’s capital and stands for leadership and unity
- Olive branches placed above and below the central star signify peace, resilience, growth and goodwill
Residents and community members are invited to attend Thursday’s milestone event as the new design officially replaces the previous standard across city government.
