New McDonald’s to replace former Burger King in Montgomery

Out with the King, in with the Golden Arches! A new McDonald’s is coming to Montgomery, taking over the site of one of its former main competitors.

According to city documents, the new restaurant will be located at 1630 Federal Drive, directly adjacent to Walmart Neighborhood Market.

What’s replacing the former Burger King on Federal Drive

The vacant site at 1630 Federal Drive hasn’t seen action since early 2024. That’s when the former Burger King closed its doors after franchisee Premier Kings shut down multiple area locations, citing staffing challenges. It was the last remaining property from that group in the area waiting to be repurposed—until now.

City records show that the existing structure will be demolished to make way for a new, roughly 4,000-square-foot McDonald’s prototype building.

Key design updates planned for the property include:

• Flipped orientation: The front of the new building will face the Walmart Neighborhood Market parking lot—the exact opposite of the current layout, where the drive-thru faces the lot.
• Double drive-thru: Planning documents indicate the new McDonald’s will feature a dual-lane drive-thru to keep order flow moving smoothly.

Former Burger King site on Federal Drive set for McDonald’s rebuild

Following a public hearing earlier this spring, momentum has picked up behind the scenes. A grading permit was issued in late spring, followed by related building permits earlier this summer.

While an exact opening timeline has not yet been announced, site prep is expected to move forward soon, though no immediate demolition was underway as of Monday, Aug. 3 . Once completed, this site will mark the 12th McDonald’s location operating in the city.
