A brand-new health + wellness center dedicated to serving retired city employees + their families will soon occupy the site of a recently demolished downtown Montgomery landmark.

City officials announced the new plans Tuesday, June 16, detailing a major neighborhood development project that will transform the former W.B. Paterson Elementary School property at 1015 East Jefferson Street into a modern healthcare hub.

The upcoming facility will replace the empty parcel with an employee-focused medical space operated by Premise Health Center.

The announcement marks a rapid transition for the historic lot. Just last week, crews finished the physical demolition of the original 1950s school structure, which had stood vacant for nearly two decades following its closure at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.

Originally built as a segregated school for Black children, the institution held a deeply rooted legacy in the capital city’s education system + was named after William Burns Paterson, a prominent local educational pioneer + second president of Alabama State University. Over the years, however, the abandoned building became a persistent target for vandalism + a visible symbol of neighborhood blight.

The city is shifting directly into building the new clinic infrastructure. Once complete, the new Premise Health Center will provide primary care, occupational health resources, preventative screenings + localized wellness programming to ensure expanded medical access for municipal retirees.

In a statement, Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed noted that the project serves a dual purpose, simultaneously tackling localized blight + investing directly in the long-term well-being of the city’s retired workforce.

“This project represents progress on multiple fronts. We are removing a long-vacant property that has been a concern for residents for years while investing in the health and well-being of the employees who serve our community every day. This transformation reflects our commitment to strengthening neighborhoods, modernizing city services, and supporting the workforce.”

Montgomery-based firm Chambliss King Architects has already been tapped to spearhead the design development process and is currently drafting the formal construction documents.

Once those architectural blueprints are finalized, the city will open a competitive bidding process to select a general contractor for the physical construction phase. Additional project timelines, structural milestones + architectural renderings are expected to be released as design work moves forward.
