Wintzell’s Oyster House appears to have closed its longtime downtown Montgomery location, leaving patrons wondering about the future of the popular seafood spot.

Located at 105 Commerce St., the casual seafood restaurant has been a fixture in the heart of downtown since opening in 2009, attached to the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center. However, signs of trouble have mounted over the past several days.

With online ordering disabled and the storefront dark all week, we have seen zero activity at the site, despite physical signage remaining outside.

Calls placed to the restaurant have gone unanswered, automatically forwarding to customer service representatives for the Wintzell’s Oyster House brand. Representatives reached by phone stated they were unaware of any potential closure, adding that corporate channels had not informed them of structural changes.

The restaurant’s Facebook page has been dark since July 9. This came just after the eatery worked through a temporary health department shutdown earlier in the summer to correct code issues and welcome diners back.

The closest remaining location of the Mobile-based chain is now in Greenville, leaving downtown diners with fewer options.
