Montgomery’s Laurel Taylor + Butter & Grit exit NBC’s ‘AGT’

Laurel Taylor, a Montgomery native with strong roots in Tallassee, once again brought local pride to the national stage this week before ending her run on NBC’s America’s Got Talent.
After making their impressive debut on America’s Got Talent earlier this summer, the Nashville-based country-soul duo returned to the stage on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Taylor joined musical partner Luke Michael, a native of small-town Ohio, to deliver their signature modern Americana sound during the Season 21 live show quarterfinals.

The story of Butter & Grit began long before the duo ever set foot on NBC’s stage. Years ago, a song written by Laurel Taylor helped Luke through a challenging period of his life. The two eventually connected at a songwriter round in Nashville, where their friendship quickly blossomed into a powerhouse songwriting partnership. Drawing inspiration from their work performing in prisons, recovery centers and veteran groups, the duo built a reputation for crafting music rooted in real human connection.
During their audition, the duo wowed judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Sofía Vergara with their heartfelt original song, “Sweet South.” The performance earned unanimous “yes” votes and elevated them straight into the live shows.
What’s next for Butter & Grit after America’s Got Talent
This week, Butter & Grit made it to the live quarterfinals broadcast, performing their original song “That’s Okay” for millions of America’s Got Talent viewers tuning in and voting.
When the results of America’s vote were revealed on Wednesday’s episode, Butter & Grit was named as one of seven acts sent home during this round of competition, bringing their journey on the show to an end.
While their time on television has wrapped up, the country duo is far from finished. Fans across central Alabama can continue following their musical journey on social media.
