Congressman Shomari C. Figures (AL-02), a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, announced that $8,506,686 in federal grant money has been awarded to the Montgomery Regional Airport.

The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will focus directly on restoring core airfield infrastructure. Specifically, the grant will be used to rehabilitate more than 9,000 feet of existing runway.

Key project goals include:

  • Enhancing structural integrity to handle heavy aircraft traffic
  • Minimizing debris to protect passenger and commercial planes
  • Extending the overall useful life of the runway pavement

“The Montgomery Regional Airport is essential to our local, state and regional economy, and this funding will help to make necessary infrastructure updates to improve conditions at the airport and ensure its long-term viability.”

— U.S. Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02)

The Montgomery Regional Airport runway overhaul is essential to maintaining compliance with strict federal safety standards while accommodating the Capital City’s growing passenger numbers and corporate travel demand.

Rep. Figures initially voiced support for the airport’s funding request in a formal letter sent to federal transportation officials earlier this year.

With the $8.5 million federal investment secured, the airport can continue serving as a pivotal gateway for regional tourism, business development and commercial air service across central Alabama.
