Montgomery is mourning a monumental loss this week. Gail Royal, owner and operator of the cherished local spot Gail’s Down the Street, died Friday, Aug. 7, following a battle with cancer, the restaurant shared in a Facebook post.
“We will surely miss her, but are relieved that she’s no longer in pain and is in Heaven”
– Russell Terry, manager of Gail’s Down the Street Cafe
Despite the loss of its iconic founder, the neighborhood cafe remains open.
A lasting impact on the Montgomery restaurant community

First opening its doors in the early 1990s, the beloved meat-and-three has served as a staple for Southern comfort food and fellowship for over three decades. The news of her passing comes after weeks of overwhelming local support. When the business recently solicited help to keep its doors open, the River Region showed up in droves to support Gail Royal and her team.
Heartfelt tribute posts flooded social media over the weekend from fellow Montgomery restaurant owners, highlighting just how deeply she influenced the local dining scene.
Jan’s Beach House Grill shared a moving reflection calling Gail Royal a mentor and dear friend who helped guide the opening of Jan’s own establishment, noting her decades of community fundraising and devotion to others. Meanwhile, the team at Vicki’s Lunch Van extended deep condolences to her family, staff and friends, honoring her long legacy of welcoming and serving the capital city.
The outpouring continued across midtown Montgomery and beyond. Sommer’s Place remembered Gail Royal for building a space that fed people well, welcomed them warmly and reflected her genuine faith and kindness. Martin’s Restaurant sent thoughts and prayers to the family and crew at Gail’s Down the Street, noting she will be truly missed by all. Simply Southern Cafe also expressed sympathy, writing that a restaurant is more than a building—it is a gathering place filled with memories, conversations and love.
How to support + honor Gail Royal this week

The spirit of giving that Gail Royal brought to midtown Montgomery will carry forward. Her daughter, Jamie McCandless, shared that a previously planned benefit event will proceed as scheduled.
The benefit gathering will take place at Gail’s Down the Street on Friday, Aug. 14, from 6-9PM to celebrate her life and support the restaurant family. The restaurant is located at 2741 Zelda Road.
