Montgomery Catfish brings professional arena football back to the River Region
Reading time: 3 minutes

Arena football is returning to Montgomery in Spring 2027 with the inaugural season of the Montgomery Catfish.
Keep reading to find out why this team is the perfect fit for the River Region, where you can watch them and how you can get involved before kickoff.
Montgomery Catfish bring pro indoor football back to the capital city
The debut of the Montgomery Catfish puts the American Arena League (AAL) at six teams so far, marking a major milestone for both the league and the city.
“We are excited to become part of the American Arena League and help continue the league’s growth. The AAL is building something great, and we wanted to be part of it.
“Our goal is to create an organization that Montgomery can be proud of both on and off the field. We look forward to connecting with fans, local businesses, and community leaders as we prepare for our inaugural 2027 season.”
Michelle Broadwater, Director of Communications and Partner of the Montgomery Catfish
While the team has not yet released where its indoor games will be played, league officials are happy about the River Region’s potential.
“This expansion represents far more than adding another team to our schedule. The Montgomery Catfish embody the future vision of the American Arena League — a commitment to community-driven leadership and a city that is ready to rally around professional football. Montgomery has a rich sports culture, and we believe this franchise will become a cornerstone for fans throughout Alabama.”
Kevin O’Hanlon, AAL Commissioner
This won’t be Montgomery’s first rodeo with indoor gridiron action. In the mid-2000s, the capital city was home to the Montgomery Maulers (and later the Montgomery Bears), which played at the historic Garrett Coliseum. That franchise folded in 2007 after three seasons.
Why the Montgomery Catfish team name fits the River Region
When naming a new franchise, you want something that resonates with the local culture. The team’s ownership knew exactly what they were doing when they picked a mascot that embodies the grit of the community.
According to the team’s website, the identity is all about resilience:
- “We landed on the catfish because it just fit. Catfish live here.”
- “They’re tough, they adapt, and they don’t go anywhere.”
- “They’re not flashy. They’re the kind of fighter you don’t see coming until they’ve already got you. That felt right for a team meant to represent this place.”
