In preparation for America’s 250th Anniversary, Travel + Leisure, one of the top travel media brands in the world, published a list of must-do experiences in all 50 states.

The experience chosen in Alabama? Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery.

“We’re thrilled by this recognition. We think Freedom Monument Sculpture Park and the National Monument to Freedom are important spaces in the American cultural landscape and we want everyone to visit.”

Bryan Stevenson, EJI executive director

Why Freedom Monument Sculpture Park is a “must-do”

The park, which is one of four Legacy Sites created by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) has been praised by numerous publications since its opening, including the New York Times

The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, which opened in 2024, focuses on America’s history and its legacy of slavery, racial terror and civil rights.

One of the most powerful monuments within the park is a wall of over 100 bronze masks honoring the nearly six million people who died while enslaved.

Here is an excerpt from the Travel + Leisure story which describes why the monument is a “must do” experience.:

“Throughout the park, powerful artworks, artifacts, and narratives confront the legacy of slavery while honoring those who endured it. The site also recognizes deeper Indigenous history, including Muscogee connections to the land.”
