Joe L. Reed’s name restored to ASU Acadome after 18 years: What to know

A historic title has officially returned to Alabama State University as Joe L. Reed’s name is restored to the campus arena. Moving forward, the iconic venue will bear its full title: the Joe L. Reed Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
The acadome is home to the ASU basketball team, hosting concerts, university and high school graduations and large community gatherings.
Who is Joe L. Reed?
Joe. L. Reed is a politician, activist and educator. He is the current vice-chair of Minority Affairs of the Alabama Democratic Party and chair of the Alabama Democratic Conference.
He is also the father of current Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.
Joe L. Reed’s contributions to Alabama State University
An alum of ASU, Joe L. Reed served on the board of trustees at the institution.
During his time on as a student at ASU, he served as student body president and was involved in student protests on campus.
The building had been known as the “Joe L. Reed Academe” until 2008, when board members voted to have his name removed.
