Jackson Hospital announces new agreement to stay open

As families across Alabama prepared to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, Jackson Hospital gave the Montgomery area an extra reason to celebrate locally.
The hospital announced on Friday, July 3, that it has a “path forward” to keep the regional health care facility open. Officials shared that the hospital reached a verbal agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.
This outstanding move means:
- Roughly 1,800 jobs will be saved
- The River Region and beyond keep access to a major health care hub in the area
- Other local hospitals avoid an immediate backlog of patients
Hospital bankruptcy background + local health care impact
Jackson Hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2025. Local and state leaders have since pledged to provide the hospital with financial aid.
The announcement brings immense relief to central Alabama. The nearly 80-year-old hospital warned early last month that it could close as early as July 2026 without a deal.
Officials were set to announce the hospital’s fate in late June, but that decision was delayed to allow the hospital board to review “important new information.”
Had the facility closed, the sudden loss of hundreds of hospital beds would have placed an unprecedented strain on neighboring medical centers, potentially crippling emergency response times and local care access throughout the River Region.
