The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is growing its presence in Montgomery with a major new infrastructure investment.
If you’ve driven along Interstate 85 South near Exit 9 (Taylor Road), you’ve likely noticed crews hard at work over the past few weeks.
A new facility is taking shape directly in front of the state agency’s existing Montgomery Medical Facility—the C.L. Rabren Laboratory—at 8160 AUM Drive.
What’s included in the $7M state forensic sciences expansion
Crews are constructing a roughly 14,000-square-foot, single-story medical facility, according to state records.
The roughly $7 million capital project encompasses comprehensive site preparation, utilities work and full building construction. Once complete, the new structure will provide expanded administrative offices as well as upgraded autopsy spaces to support ongoing operations. A targeted completion timeline was not immediately available.
Montgomery-based Holley-Henley Builders, Inc. is serving as the general contractor leading the construction.

This state forensic sciences expansion in Montgomery represents a significant upgrade for regional public health and safety services.
The Montgomery Medical Facility provides vital death investigation and forensic pathology services to 35 counties, representing more than half of the entire state of Alabama. The upgraded facility will bolster operational efficiency and capacity for the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences team as they continue serving local communities across central and southern Alabama.
