Hyundai Motor Company is shifting production of its Tucson Hybrid to its Montgomery facility, marking a major milestone for Alabama and American manufacturing.

The decision was announced this week by Hyundai global COO José Muñoz during a fireside chat at the Automotive News Congress in Detroit. Muñoz noted that a substantial $500 million investment package includes moving Tucson Hybrid assembly stateside.

While the traditional gas-powered version of the vehicle is already made at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) in Montgomery, all Tucson Hybrid models sold in the U.S. market have previously been imported from South Korea.

Shifting this output allows Hyundai to build electrified vehicles closer to its core consumers. However, a specific timeline for the production move was not immediately released.

Bringing the Tucson Hybrid assembly to HMMA, located off Interstate 65 in Montgomery, allows the company to strengthen its localized manufacturing footprint. Having celebrated 20 years in the capital city in 2025, the Hyundai facility has a deep-rooted history of automotive excellence in the region.

Muñoz highlighted that the sheer scale of Hyundai’s U.S. investments makes the company “more American than a lot of the American OEMs.” He added that the company has improved dramatically in vehicle quality and is fully prepared for the next challenge: deepening its manufacturing commitment to the U.S. market.

The decision to transition Hyundai Tucson Hybrid assembly to the local plant highlights HMMA’s critical role in the automaker’s long-term American strategy. As the facility prepares to integrate new hybrid components and manufacturing processes, the local workforce remains at the center of this expansion.

This major production shift not only highlights the facility’s versatility but also secures its position as a key driver for regional economic growth and advanced manufacturing success in Alabama.

Meanwhile, the automaker is gearing up for another major milestone: Hyundai will unveil the all-new 2027 Tucson during a world premiere in Long Island City, New York on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 4:15 p.m. CT. The public can watch the event live on the HyundaiWorldwide YouTube channel.
