Friday morning marked another significant investment announcement for the state capital.

Hyundai Power Transformers USA held a groundbreaking ceremony for a $200 million expansion of its Montgomery manufacturing operations. The move is expected to create 200 new high-quality jobs and significantly increase domestic production capacity.

“When we made the decision in 2011 to locate HD-HPT in Montgomery, we saw a community committed to partnership, workforce excellence, and infrastructure support. The collaboration between state and local leaders, economic development partners, and workforce training organizations made this growth possible — and continues to position us for long-term success.”

This expansion pushes the company’s total investment in Montgomery to $277 million, supporting 600 jobs since it first
established operations in 2011.

The Montgomery Region Chamber of Commerce said 70% of the nation’s large power transformers are currently in need of replacement. This expansion will allow Alabama to make an impact on a national level.

Hynudai now supplies more than 15% of U.S. large core-type transformers — a significant contribution to strengthening and modernizing the nation’s power grid.

“Hyundai Power Transformers’ $200 million expansion reinforces Montgomery’s growing role in strengthening America’s power grid and securing critical energy infrastructure. Investments like this create quality jobs for our residents and position Montgomery as a key
contributor to the nation’s long-term economic and energy security.”

Steven L. Reed, Mayor of Montgomery

The new facility, scheduled to open in mid-2027, will enable HD-HPT to manufacture even larger transformer units in the United States.

Details on the construction process and timeline are expected to be announced at a later time.

This investment adds to a sustained period of employer reinvestment across the Capital Region, reinforcing Montgomery’s competitive
position in advanced manufacturing.

“This expansion positions Montgomery at the center of strengthening America’s energy infrastructure. By growing domestic transformer production, HD-HPT is advancing national resilience while contributing to sustained economic growth in our region.”

Anna Buckalew, President & CEO of Montgomery Regional Chamber
