A major transformation is officially on the horizon for the west Montgomery community after an exciting new revitalization plan was unveiled Monday afternoon by Mayor Steven Reed. The initiative is spearheaded by a remodel of the historic Fairview Farmers Market and aims to bring fresh energy to the entire corridor.

Here is what we know about the project and what it means for the River Region.

A few years back, Fairview Farmers Market relocated to a smaller retail space along West Fairview Avenue due to construction in the area. This new plan will completely remodel and upgrade the market’s original location, making it a community hub again.

Mayor Reed noted that community revitalization must be inclusive, ensuring that every neighborhood in the Capital City sees growth.

“For us, it’s important that when we’re thinking about revitalization, we think about all the corridors that exist in the city, not just those that attract the big headlines and new developments.”

Beyond economic growth, the project addresses crucial community needs. The mayor said the importance of the farmers market on West Fairview Avenue to this area, allowing for fresh food options for residents who may be underserved.

Rebuilding west Montgomery on steady momentum

West Montgomery is no stranger to growth. This area has seen notable improvements in recent years, including a brand-new fire station, housing and major road infrastructure upgrades.

The farmers market remodel is just the first piece of a much larger puzzle. Reed said this project is part of a broader plan for the area to include a new police substation and additional housing for the area, ensuring the neighborhood grows safely and sustainably.

“[Police] Chief Grayboys and I talked about strategically making sure our resources are spread throughout the city, not just in one or two places.”

“West Montgomery is open for business”

The city isn’t stopping with public infrastructure. Momentum is here and city leaders believe this community can be vibrant and profitable.

With its prime location right off Interstate 65, the city is actively looking for partners to help the area thrive. Reed called on investors to bring restaurants and retailers to this area.

“West Montgomery is open for business, it’s alive and well and we want to see all of you do what we’re doing here, which is continuing to invest in part of this community.”
