Reading time: 3 minutes

Finding ways to keep your family entertained all summer long without draining your wallet can feel like a mission in itself. Fortunately, the River Region has a stellar lineup of ways to say “thank you” to our local service members, veterans and their families.
From air-conditioned museum escapes to Friday nights under the stadium lights, here is how to maximize your military perks in the Gunter and Maxwell community this season.
Montgomery Zoo’s Military Appreciation Day

- Where: 2301 Coliseum Pkwy., Montgomery
- The Deal: 100% free admission, train rides + lunch
Kick off the summer break with the biggest single-day freebie of the season. The Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum is hosting its annual Military Appreciation Day, waiving all gate fees for active-duty and retired military personnel, along with their dependent family members.
Your valid military ID unlocks total access to:
- The zoo grounds
- The indoor Mann Museum
- The Waters of the World exhibit
- A complimentary train ride around the park
To make it a true day out, a free lunch with refreshments will be served to military families in the Main Events area from 11:30AM to 2PM.
Insider tip: If you can’t make it out this Thursday, don’t sweat it. The Montgomery Zoo offers a steady, year-round military discount of $1 off general admission for both adults and children.
Museum of Alabama in downtown Montgomery

- When: Monday through Saturday (8:30AM – 4:30PM)
- Where: 624 Washington Ave., Montgomery

When the summer humidity hits, you need a reliable indoor fallback. Located right downtown on Washington Avenue, the Museum of Alabama (housed inside the Alabama Department of Archives and History) serves as the state’s flagship history museum.
The museum features world-class, highly interactive spaces like the Alabama Voices exhibition, which guides visitors through centuries of local history with hands-on displays that keep kids engaged. It is entirely indoors, completely free for military families all summer and offers a cool, quiet afternoon away from the brutal midday sun.
