When the summer humidity hits, you need a reliable indoor fallback. Located right downtown on Washington Avenue, the Museum of Alabama (housed inside the Alabama Department of Archives and History) serves as the state’s flagship history museum.

The museum features world-class, highly interactive spaces like the Alabama Voices exhibition, which guides visitors through centuries of local history with hands-on displays that keep kids engaged. It is entirely indoors, completely free for military families all summer and offers a cool, quiet afternoon away from the brutal midday sun.
