Montgomery’s Baptist Medical Center South has been designated as central Alabama’s first Level 1 trauma center, according to hospital officials.

Before this milestone designation, only four hospitals in the entire state operated as Level 1 trauma centers, data from the Alabama Department of Public Health shows.

What the Level 1 trauma status means for Central Alabama

Baptist South becomes the region’s only Level 1 trauma center.

With this new Level 1 trauma center designation, Baptist South is now fully equipped to provide the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients. What this means for residents is that the facility offers 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, alongside prompt availability of care in crucial specialties like orthopedic surgery, emergency + internal medicine. Essentially, patients with the most severe, life-threatening injuries may no longer need to be airlifted or transported to other parts of the state to receive trauma intervention, saving precious minutes when every second counts.

Level 1 trauma centers operate with specialized surgical teams ready around the clock to treat the most critical, life-threatening injuries, including:

  • Gunshot or stab wounds
  • Pedestrian strikes
  • Falls from significant heights
  • Open limb fractures

How Baptist South prepared for Level 1 status

Baptist South, located on East South Boulevard, is the area’s largest health care facility. Before earning this upgraded status, the hospital operated as a Level 2 trauma center. To prepare for the requirements of a top-tier designation, the hospital recently completed a $14 million expansion to its emergency department, adding over 11,000 square feet + increasing its treatment capacity from 53 rooms to 83 rooms.

This elevation positions Montgomery as a premier hub for emergency medicine in the state.
