Alabama State Athletics took home three awards at the 2026 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Sports Awards, highlighting the programs success across multiple categories.

Here’s the honors that Alabama State took home:

Chris Wright wins Basketball Coach of the Year

Chris Wright enters his first year as Head Coach for the Alabama State Hornets basketball team. Last season, Wright led Langston University to a successful 29-8 record, showcasing his ability to develop talent and build a competitive program.

Wright led Langston to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) runner-up finishes in 2022 and 2026.

With a 332-121 career record and turning Langston into one of the elite small college programs in the country, Wright looks to continues the success the Hornets have had under previous coach Tony Madlock, who left for an Associate Head Coach position for the Memphis Tigers.

Anuk Christiansz earns back-to-back Tennis Coach of the Year awards

Anuk Christiansz has now won back-to-back HBCU Sports Awards Tennis Coach of the Year awards.

Since taking over as Head Coach of the men’s and women’s tennis team, Christiansz has won a combined 15 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) men’s and women’s tennis tournament titles and six SWAC regular season titles.

He has established himself as one of the most successful coaches in the program’s history.

ASU Athletics recognized as the HBCU Sports Social Media Presence of the Year

Alabama State Athletics has been producing award-winning content and now the hard work pays off.

Led by Director of Social Media and Creative Content Khalil Stewart, the department was honored for consistent, collaborative storytelling and engaging the Hornet fan community on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
