Montgomery’s own MAX Credit Union is continuing its streak of national recognition for workplace excellence.

For the fifth consecutive year, the local financial institution has been named one of American Banker’s Best Credit Unions to Work For. Out of 70 financial institutions nationwide selected for the 2026 list, MAX Credit Union secured the #30 spot overall.

Here is a look at what makes this central Alabama institution stand out and why its employees keep giving it top marks.

The national recognition program evaluates credit unions across the country based on workplace policies, philosophy, systems and overall employee experience. Final rankings are determined primarily through comprehensive, anonymous surveys completed by team members themselves.

Headquartered right here in Montgomery, MAX Credit Union is led by CEO Martin Head and operates 16 locations across central and east Alabama. The organization currently employs nearly 300 team members. Guided by a core mission of “people helping people,” the organization focuses on fostering hospitality, simplicity and integrity across all of its branches and operations.

“When our team members feel supported, they are better equipped and empowered to deliver the exceptional service our members deserve. We are honored to be recognized as a best credit union, and we remain committed to fostering a culture that helps every team member bring their best to work each day.”

– Tara McDowell, chief talent officer of MAX Credit Union

For longtime staff, that commitment is evident across decades of service.

“In my years with MAX, I have seen how this organization invests in its people and creates opportunities for team members to grow, lead, and make a difference.”

– Kathy Cobb, who has spent more than 50 years with the credit union

So, what makes working at MAX Credit Union unique across its 16 locations? Beyond competitive compensation, American Banker noted that the organization offers robust employee support systems, including:

  • Health + wellness: Comprehensive Blue Cross Blue Shield medical coverage
  • Retirement + education: A generous 401(k) retirement plan and tuition reimbursement programs
  • Professional growth: Focus groups, networking events and ongoing career development opportunities

Community service is also deeply woven into the credit union’s workplace identity. Through Volunteer Time Off (VTO), staff members are compensated while giving back to local causes they care about in their hometowns.

American Banker specifically highlighted MAX’s standout charitable initiatives, such as the annual MAX4Kids events. These community efforts include local golf tournaments and clay shooting fundraisers that bring team members together to raise money for children and nonprofits across the River Region and beyond.
