Whether you wish to pay your respects in silence, push yourself in a physical tribute or give back to those in need, Central Alabama offers several ways to participate.

Honor first responders at Montgomery Fire & Rescue commemoration

Montgomery Fire & Rescue is inviting the public to gather for a solemn 25-year 9/11 anniversary commemoration at the Montgomery Fire Department headquarters.

• When: Friday, Sept. 11, from 8:45AM-10AM
• Where: Fire Headquarters (19 Madison Ave., Montgomery)
• Details: The ceremony program will feature the posting of the colors, opening remarks, guest speakers, an invocation and a traditional tolling of the bell. The ceremony will also include special honor recognition for Montgomery Fire Rescue’s own fallen firefighters, offering community members a space to stand together in unity and ensure we never forget.

Challenge yourself at Maxwell AFB 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

For those looking to pay tribute through physical endurance, Maxwell Air Force Base is hosting a weeklong Memorial Stair Climb Challenge at the Fitness Center Annex.

• When: Now through Friday, Sept. 11 (6AM-8PM daily)
• Where: Maxwell AFB Fitness Center Annex (51 Maxwell Blvd E, Montgomery)
• Details: Participants can complete 110 flights on the StairMaster or step mills, symbolizing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers. This challenge is open to all base personnel, dependents and authorized patrons who want to climb in honor of the 343 FDNY firefighters and emergency personnel who lost their lives on 9/11.

Pay tribute with Prattville’s wreath laying ceremony

The City of Prattville will gather at the Public Safety Building to host its annual September 11th Wreath Laying Ceremony.

• When: Friday, Sept. 11, from 7:30-8:30AM
• Where: Prattville Public Safety Building (201 Gin Shop Hill Rd., Prattville)
• Details: Join local city officials, police officers, firefighters and neighbors for a brief wreath-laying ceremony honoring those who gave everything 25 years ago.

Give back at the Prattville community blood drive

If you are looking for a practical way to serve your community on National Day of Service and Remembrance, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are partnering to host a special blood drive in Prattville.

• When: Friday, Sept. 11 from 2-6PM
• Where: 2200 Cobbs Ford Road, Prattville
• Details: Donors can step onto the LifeSouth bloodmobile to save local lives. Eligible donors must be at least 16 years old (with written parental permission) and weigh at least 110 pounds. Participants can sign up in advance at JustServe.org.
